Manchester United legend Paul Scholes isn’t sure Viktor Gyokeres is the right kind of striker for Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal team.
This comes after Gyokeres completed a big £64 million move from Sporting Lisbon to the Gunners.
Speaking on The Overlap Fan Debate, Scholes questioned if Arteta really wanted Gyokeres in the first place. He pointed out that Arsenal took a long time to decide before signing him, which might mean he wasn’t their top choice.
Gyokeres once played in England with Brighton but didn’t do very well. However, he turned things around at Coventry City and then became a star at Sporting Lisbon, scoring an amazing 97 goals in just 102 games — including 52 last season and a Champions League hat-trick against Manchester City.
Even though Scholes admitted Gyokeres has great numbers, he said the striker might not match Arsenal’s style of play. He explained that Gyokeres was good in a counter-attack system at Sporting, where the team quickly moves forward after getting the ball. But Arsenal is different — they like to keep the ball and control the game.
“Can he make smart runs when Arsenal is holding the ball and looking for space?” Scholes asked.
He also compared Gyokeres to Newcastle’s Alexander Isak, saying Isak has the kind of movement and football brain that fits a team like Arsenal better.
Gyokeres’ first game for Arsenal didn’t help change minds. He only touched the ball twice in 13 minutes during a 1-0 loss to Tottenham in Hong Kong.
