The Nigerian film industry is in profound mourning following the tragic death of acclaimed producer, director, and writer Dimbo Atiya, who reportedly died of a heart attack.
Mofe Duncan, an actor, announced his death on social media, informing fans and colleagues of the tragic news. His untimely death is a huge loss for Nollywood, cutting short the life of a visionary artist who significantly changed television drama in Nigeria.
Atiya was born in Nasarawa State and reared in Jos, Plateau State, where he was exposed to a culturally varied milieu that influenced his perspective.
His mother, an English graduate who acted in local Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) programs in Jos, inspired him to pursue a career in media. Atiya acquired an early interest in storytelling after being introduced to television sets by his mother when he was young.
He pursued formal media and journalism education, attending the Nigerian Institute of Journalism in Jos and the National Film Institute.
He went on to attend the New York Film Academy in the United States, where he learned practical directing and production.
Atiya carved out a special niche for himself in the entertainment industry by supporting and honoring northern culture via contemporary storytelling.
Based primarily in Abuja, he rose to prominence for using the capital city and northern locations as sets for high-end political thrillers and family dramas.
He effectively brought regional talent to the mainstream national stage, providing many actors and crew members from the north their big break.
One of his most famous contributions to Nigerian television was the hit political drama series “Sons of the Caliphate,” which examined power, corruption, and the elite lifestyle in northern Nigeria.
He also wrote and produced the popular long-running drama series Halita, which won the hearts of millions across Africa.
His creative ability was shown even further when his drama series The Rishantes received the prestigious Best Africa Magic Original Drama Series award at the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA).
His other major works include directing the romantic feature picture Still Falling and the thrilling miniseries The Plan.
Beyond his creative accomplishments, Atiya was recognized as an industry mentor, having produced hundreds of jobs for actors and production crew members through his company, Innovative Television Kontents (ITK).
Colleagues, fans, and industry stakeholders have expressed their shock and loss, remembering him as a superb storyteller, gentleman, and innovator who pushed the frontiers of Nollywood entertainment.
The news of his death came hours after the death of actress Tope Osoba.
