Arsenal Kick Off Champions League with Gritty 2-0 Victory in Bilbao

Arsenal began their 2025/26 UEFA Champions League journey with a solid 2-0 win against Athletic Club at San Mamés on Tuesday night.

The first half was tough for the Gunners. They kept the ball but found it hard to break down the strong Bilbao defence, and chances were few.

Substitutes Made the Difference

In the second half, coach Mikel Arteta brought in Leandro Trossard and Gabriel Martinelli — and the game changed.

In the 72nd minute, Trossard sent a fine pass to Martinelli, who controlled the ball well and fired past goalkeeper Unai Simón to make it 1-0.

Not long after, the two switched roles. Martinelli cut the ball back for Trossard, and he calmly finished for Arsenal’s second goal of the night.
