Back-to-Back Brilliance: Okonkwo Named AfroBasket 2025 MVP Again

Nigeria’s star player, Amy Okonkwo, has been named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket tournament, after helping the D’Tigress win big in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.
The 28-year-old forward played a huge role in Nigeria’s 78-64 victory over Mali in the final match on Sunday night, held at the Palais des Sports de Treichville.
With this win, Nigeria has now won the AfroBasket title five times in a row and seven times overall – showing they are the best women’s basketball team in Africa. Big credit also goes to head coach Rena Wakama for leading the team to success again.
Okonkwo didn’t just help her team win – she also stood out with her scoring, leadership, and strong play all through the tournament. She also won the MVP award in the 2023 edition in Rwanda, making her the second Nigerian ever to win it twice in a row – just like Mfon Udoka, who did it in 2003 and 2005.
Amy’s amazing performance helped Nigeria stay undefeated from start to finish, and her name is now written in AfroBasket history once again.
