My Children Are My Real Investment — Oga Bello

Nollywood legend, Adebayo Salami, also known as Oga Bello ,has been in the film industry for over 60 years. He’s one of the most respected actors in Nigeria and has raised a big family — he’s the proud father of 18 children!
In a chat with Rotimi Ige, the actor shared stories about his life, family, and the secret to staying strong and active in Nollywood for so long.
How It All Started
Oga Bello began acting in 1964, when he joined a drama group called Young Concert Party led by the late Ojo Ladipo (Baba Mero). He didn’t plan for his children to follow in his footsteps, but many of them, including Femi Adebayo, are now doing great in the movie world.
He said,
“I didn’t push them into acting. They followed their passion. But I always told them — no following me to rehearsals unless you bring home good grades!”
Why He Didn’t Build Many Houses
Many people try to build houses or buy properties to leave behind for their children. But not Oga Bello.
“I made up my mind that I won’t leave buildings for my kids. I just wanted two houses — one in Lagos and one in my hometown. Instead, I invested in their education. That’s what I believe will help them in life.”
And today, his children are doing well and taking care of him. That, he says, is his greatest reward.
How He Stayed Strong for 60 Years in Acting
When asked how he has stayed active for so long, he smiled and said it’s all by “God’s grace” But also, he never stopped learning.
“I moved with the times. From stage plays, to TV, to movies. I even travelled to London and France for training.”
He also learned a lot from the late Adeyemi Afolayan (Ade Love), who taught him many things about movie making.
His Most Famous Plays and Films
Oga Bello said the stage play “Omo Gbemiga” made him popular. But it was the movie “Omo Oru Kan” in 1987 that gave him big fame.
For his 60 years on stage celebration, he made a new movie called “Her Excellency,” a remake of one of his older movies. The film talks about the power women have in supporting or destroying their husbands, and features top actors like Sola Sobowale l, Bimbo Ademoye, and Femi Adebayo.
The Sad Moments
He also shared some painful memories — especially when his boss, Ojo Ladipo, and his wife died. He almost quit acting but was encouraged by people who believed in his talent.
“Success doesn’t come easy,” he said. “There were hard times, but I never gave up.”
Advice on Old Age and Health
Oga Bello says growing old comes with challenges, and many people are not prepared.
“A lot of people don’t plan for old age. I didn’t build many houses, but I raised my children well. And now, they’re taking care of me.”
What He Wants to Be Remembered For
“I want people to remember me for the messages in my movies,” he said.
