MI Abaga: I’m in My Own Lane—No Competition in the Music Industry

Popular Nigerian rapper MI Abaga, whose real name is Jude Lemfani Abaga, says he’s not trying to compete with big Afrobeats stars like Davido or Wizkid.

In a recent chat, the 43-year-old music star from Plateau State said he is happy with where he is in his music journey. Even though the music industry has changed a lot over the years, MI said he has stayed true to himself and his style.

He said he really respects the younger music stars and their success, but he doesn’t feel the need to copy their lifestyle or chase trends.

MI talked about how things have gotten more expensive these days. He said cars that used to cost ₦20 million when he was younger now cost over ₦100 million. But instead of spending money on flashy things, he likes to spend wisely and help people around him.

He said:
“I’m not Davido. I’m not Wizkid. They’re doing great and they are very popular right now. But I’m MI, and I don’t feel like I’ve lost anything.

The cars they’re buying now for 100 to 200 million, back in the day, we got them for 20 million. I live in the real Nigeria, where people need help. I won’t spend ₦50 million just to travel when people around me need support.”

MI also spoke about his relationship with his brother and fellow rapper Jesse Jagz. He said any issues between them are family matters and have nothing to do with music.
