A tragic incident occurred in Marenga, Bunyala West Ward, Budalang’i Constituency, Kenya, when a 28-year-old man identified as Emmanuel Makokha lost his life after collapsing and falling into an open grave during a burial ceremony.
Makokha, who served as a drummer (mpiga ngoma) during the burial, was actively participating in the proceedings when the incident happened.
In a widely circulated video, the young man is seen slipping and falling into the grave, hitting his head on the coffin of the deceased before landing inside.
Eyewitnesses and fellow mourners quickly rushed to his aid, pulling him out of the grave in a frantic attempt to save him. Unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries shortly afterwards.
Confirming the incident, the area chief stated that the atmosphere turned chaotic following the sudden fall.
Makokha’s unexpected death cast a shadow over the funeral, turning a day of mourning into a double tragedy. Authorities are reportedly investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.
His family, church members, and the local community have been left reeling from the loss, describing him as a lively and committed young man who was always present at community events.
