Reno Omokri Claims: Super Falcons Won WAFCON Because Peter Obi Stayed Away

Popular Nigerian political commentator and former presidential aide, Reno Omokri, has stirred reactions online after claiming that Peter Obi’s absence helped the Super Falcons win the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

The Super Falcons made Nigeria proud by beating host nation Morocco 3-2 in a thrilling final on Saturday night, July 26. It was a big moment, as Nigeria lifted the trophy again after last winning it in 2018.

Reacting to the win on his verified X (formerly Twitter) account the next day, Omokri said he was happy that Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, didn’t attend the final.

According to him, Obi’s presence at past football events has been a distraction. He pointed out the Super Eagles’ 1-1 draw against Zimbabwe in March, during the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, and blamed Obi for being a “bad luck” charm.

> “Thank God Peter Obi did not attend the WAFCON final. That is how he would have distracted the Super Falcons, like he did to the Super Eagles during the World Cup qualifying match at Uyo,” Omokri wrote.

He didn’t stop there. Reno also said Peter Obi didn’t show real support for sports when he was governor of Anambra State. He claimed Obi never built any world-class stadium that could host big matches.

> “A man who couldn’t build a stadium during eight years as governor now wants to sit in a stadium built by another governor (Godswill Akpabio),” Omokri added.

“If he really loved football, why didn’t he support it when he was in power?”

Omokri also dragged Obi over his recent comments on education, saying he wasn’t in a good position to advise the government about Dentistry students or university issues.

> “Someone who didn’t build even a nursery school as governor is now giving advice about university training? That’s not right,” he said.

Omokri’s comments have gotten mixed reactions online, with many Nigerians sharing different opinions.
