Legend Locked In: Liverpool Freeze Jota’s No.20 Shirt for Eternity

Liverpool Football Club has made a very special and emotional decision to honour Diogo Jota after he sadly passed away.
The 28-year-old Portuguese football star died in a car crash in Spain last week, along with his younger brother, Andre Silva. His death has left the football world in shock and deep sadness.
To remember Diogo forever, Liverpool announced that no player—whether in the men’s team, women’s team, or even the academy—will ever wear the No.20 shirt again. That number will be kept just for Jota, forever.
The club said they spoke with Diogo’s wife, Rute, and his family before making this decision.
In their message, Liverpool said:
“By retiring this squad number, we are making it eternal, and therefore never to be forgotten.”
They added:
“Diogo joined us in 2020. He won us number 20, and he wore it with pride, love, and honour. He will always be our number 20.”
Jota joined Liverpool from Wolves in 2020. In just five seasons, he played 131 games and scored 49 goals. He also helped the team win big trophies and made a strong bond with his teammates, coaches, and fans.
The club’s top officials—Mike Gordon, Billy Hogan, John Henry, and Tom Werner—said this kind of tribute is very rare and shows how much Diogo meant to everyone at Liverpool.
“This has never been done before in the club’s history,” they said. “It shows how special Diogo was to all of us.”
Liverpool also sent love and prayers to Diogo’s wife, their three children, and his whole family during this painful time.
