Tottenham 1-0 Man Utd: Spurs end 17-year wait for silverware with Europa League final win

Tottenham Hotspur claimed their first trophy in 17 years by edging past Manchester United 1-0 in what has already been dubbed one of the ugliest European finals in recent history.

In a clash between two struggling Premier League sides sitting 16th and 17th respectively, it took a chaotic moment just before half-time to separate the sides.

Brennan Johnson appeared to bundle the ball over the line in the 42nd minute, but replays suggested it was actually a deflection off Luke Shaw’s arm that sealed United’s fate.

Either way, Spurs had their goal, and they weren’t about to give it back.

United came agonisingly close to a late equaliser when Rasmus Højlund pounced on a goalkeeping error from Guglielmo Vicario, only to be denied by a stunning acrobatic clearance from Micky van de Ven on the line.

It was arguably an uninspiring contest, defined more by errors than moments of brilliance.

But none of that will matter to Tottenham, who finally lifted silverware after nearly two decades of heartbreak.
