Ubi Franklin Breaks Silence on Controversial ‘No-Pregnancy’ Clause in Female Artistes’ Deals

Popular Nigerian music boss and talent manager, Ubi Franklin, has said that female artistes who sign with his label must agree not to get pregnant while under contract.

He said this during a chat on the Culture Sonic Podcast. According to him, getting pregnant during the time of the contract can slow down or even stop an artiste’s career. It can also lead to loss of money for the people who invest in the artiste.

Ubi explained that the music business is very expensive. He said it can cost over N150 million or even up to N300 million just to help a new artiste become popular. If a female artiste suddenly gets pregnant, it can affect all the plans and hard work.

In his words:
“If I’m signing a female artiste, I always put it in the contract that for the time of the deal, you will not get pregnant.”

He made it clear that he isn’t against women having children, but said it’s better for a female artiste to first build a strong career before thinking of becoming a mother.

He added:
“Just imagine you’ve spent a lot of money on a new artiste, and she gets pregnant. That could be the end of the whole plan.”

Ubi also asked people to think of any female artiste in Nigeria who got pregnant before becoming successful—and how hard it was for them to bounce back.

He ended by saying:
“I’m not saying they shouldn’t have kids, but first, build your career strong.”
