Poly Ibadan Students Say No to Renaming School After Olunloyo

Students of The Polytechnic, Ibadan have openly rejected the decision to rename their school to Omololu Olunloyo Polytechnic, Ibadan.

Governor Seyi Makinde made the announcement during a special event held in honor of former Oyo State Governor, Victor Omololu Olunloyo, who was also the first rector of the polytechnic.

But the students, through their Student Union Government (SUG) led by Comrade Oladipupo Olamide, said they are not happy with the move. In a statement released on Thursday, they described the decision as “unfair and disrespectful”.

“We, the Student Union of The Polytechnic Ibadan, are deeply disappointed by the recent decision to rename our school. We believe it is not necessary and it ignores the long-standing history and image of our institution,” the statement said.

They explained that the school has been known for over 50 years as a center of academic excellence, with many great graduates across Nigeria.

“Changing the name will destroy the school’s identity and affect its reputation. We want the school to keep its original name, which represents its values, history, and mission.”

The students added that they are open to discussions with the government but asked for the renaming decision to be cancelled immediately.
