Lagos LG Honours MKO Abiola with Landmark Market Project

The Agege Local Government Area in Lagos State has officially begun the construction of a brand-new market named after Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (MKO) Abiola, the winner of the June 12, 1993 presidential election.
The new MKO Abiola Market, according to the council, is being built to support traders, create job opportunities, and promote business growth in Agege. The groundbreaking ceremony took place on Monday and was led by the Executive Chairman of the council, Hon. Ganiyu Egunjobi.
During his speech, Egunjobi described the market as a “life-changing” project. He said it would help traders and artisans by giving them clean, modern stalls to work in. Shoppers will also benefit from a better and safer place to buy goods.
> “This market is more than just a building—it’s a place of opportunity,” he said. “It will support hundreds of small business owners and help thousands of shoppers enjoy a better market experience.”
The project is being developed through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) with Urban Shelter and Truworth Ventures. These companies will help build a modern, hygienic, and accessible market that meets today’s standards.
Egunjobi said the market was named after MKO Abiola to honour his legacy as a strong voice for democracy, fairness, and helping ordinary people.
> “This project not only grows our economy, but also celebrates MKO Abiola’s values—justice, equity, and empowerment,” the chairman said.
As his time in office comes to an end, Egunjobi believes this market will have long-lasting benefits. It will create jobs during construction, boost local trade, and improve how business is done in Agege.
He also thanked the development partners for believing in the council’s vision and investing in the people of Agege.
> “To Urban Shelter and Truworth Ventures—we are grateful for your support. Your commitment ensures that this project will stand the test of time,” he said.
Egunjobi encouraged residents to take good care of the market once it’s completed.
> “This market belongs to all of us. Let us protect it, manage it well, and make it useful for today and future generations,” he said.
