"No Work, No Pay: Oyo Issues Final Warning to Absentee Teachers"

The Oyo State Government has given a serious warning to 202 teachers who are not working in any school right now. The government says if these teachers don’t return to their old schools quickly, they may stop getting paid.

These teachers used to work in primary schools, which are schools for younger children. But in 2022, the government at that time moved many of them to secondary schools, where older students learn. Later on, when a new government came in, about 2,000 of those teachers were officially added into the secondary school system.

But here’s the problem: 202 of the teachers were not added because there were not enough teaching spaces or they didn’t meet the rules needed to teach in secondary schools. Now, instead of going back to their old schools, they’ve been staying away and are not working anywhere. Even though they are not working, the government has still been paying their salaries every month.

Dr. Nureni Adeniran, who is the Chairman of the Oyo State Universal Basic Education Board (also called OYOSUBEB), said this must stop. He spoke to the Education Secretaries from all 33 local governments in the state during a meeting held in Ibadan, the capital city of Oyo State.

He said:

> “Any teacher who was not accepted into the secondary school system must go back to their local primary school offices, called LGUBEAs, immediately. If they don’t, they risk losing their salaries.”

Dr. Adeniran explained that some teachers were not moved into the secondary school system because there were no open spaces or because they did not meet the transfer conditions. But that doesn’t mean they should stay at home doing nothing.

He said it is important for all teachers to be present and active in schools so that more children can learn. The government wants every child to get good, quality education. But that will only happen if teachers go back to their classrooms to teach.

He also asked the Education Secretaries to watch over all school-related projects in their local areas and make sure everything is working properly.

In simple words, the government is saying:

“Dear teachers, please go back to your schools and do your job, or we won’t be able to keep paying you.”

This is part of the government’s plan to improve schools and make sure every child has a teacher and a chance to learn well.
