A Local Government Inspector (LGI) of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Abeokuta South, Ogun State, Abass Olalekan, has been arrested after the death of a female corps member.

The corps member, Victoria Ariyo, was serving in the same local government. Reports say she died on Tuesday because of health problems related to pregnancy.

It was gathered that she ended her pregnancy, but later developed serious complications which led to her death.

According to a source, the LGI announced her death and asked some corps members to help arrange her burial. She was later buried at Kobape Cemetery along Kobape-Sagamu Road in Abeokuta.

Some sources also claimed that Olalekan and the deceased were in a romantic relationship, which led to the pregnancy.

Her death happened not long after another female corps member, Adeleye Mary, who was said to be her friend, also died under unclear circumstances. Mary was serving in the same Abeokuta South Local Government and was posted to Ogun State Television (OGTV) as her place of primary assignment.

A police source confirmed that Olalekan has been arrested and is currently in police custody at the state command headquarters in Eleweran, Abeokuta.

When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, did not give full details about the arrest but confirmed that the case is being investigated.

He said that the State Criminal Investigation Department is looking into the death of Victoria Ariyo.
